“If you really want to be great at something you have to truly care about it. If you want to be great in a particular area, you have to obsess over it.” – Kobe Bryant
I am an aspiring broadcast journalism major who finally has the time, motivation and drive to fuel my obsession to talk and spread love about the things I enjoy. In order to talk about the several interests I’m going to blog about, I thought it’d be a good idea for my first blog to be about myself; Maxwell Nelson aka Wheel Easy.
Let’s start with the name, right? Wheel Easy is a name I chose for myself in high school when everyone was trying to be a sound cloud rapper. No, I’m not joking. Maybe when I get a major journalism / broadcasting job I’ll drop the lyrics I wrote and even the beat my friends and I made at lunch! Wheel comes from my disability. I suffer from Osteogenesis Imperfecta or brittle bones disease. To dumb that down, imagine you’re riding a bike and fall down on the pavement. You might get bruised up, feel sore, at the most twist your ankle or something, right? Well for me, if I fall off a bike onto concrete, I might break 5 bones (just like I did last summer!) Easy comes from my high school* love for G-Eazy and a nod to Eazy-E because I saw ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and thought it was awesome, even though I’ve come to realize that adaptation of NWA is quite unfaithful amongst other things.
So there’s the name. Now, what am I going to write about? Quite frankly, I am going to make these blogs when I want to because I want to. The quote I put at the top means a lot to me. I am ironically a Clippers fan, as you’ll come to find later, but I admired Kobe the person much more than the basketball player. I need to obsess over this because I believe I have a unique perspective and in general, I just like talking about the things I’m passionate about.
Sports
New York Yankees: Alright, let’s get the one I’m gonna get booed on for out of the way. I became a Yankees fan when I was born. When your mother was a Bronx regular, you have no choice, even when I was raised on the west coast my entire life. The Yankees were my first love and I still love Judge and Cole as much as I adored Jeter, A-Rod, Ichiro and C.C.
LA Clippers: Now here come the “Wow, you could’ve picked the Lakers dude” people. Look man, back in 2012 I was watching Blake Griffin dunk on people and make basketball look like the most exciting thing since the toaster! And yes, it was a bad decision in hindsight, especially seeing how this 2024 roster is shaping up as of early July, but you can read my thoughts on them in a future blog.
Las Vegas Raiders: Yes, the AFC Cowboys are my National Football League team, yes it hurts every single year. I became a Raiders fan because as a huge fan of defense across all sports, seeing Khalil Mack was my football equivalent to seeing Blake Griffin dunk. I was in love and then Jon Gruden took him away from me and I’ve been sad ever since. Thank God for Maxx Crosby.
Seattle Kraken: “Ah yes, pick the expansion team Max, it’ll be so fun Max, I promise you won’t be jealous of the Knights!” But seriously, I adore my mythical beast team that finds a way to always make me come back; whether it’s the goalie hugs, the Davey Jones hat or the ability to have the best commentary group in the sport (in my opinion), the Kraken always keep me treading in their waters.
LA Galaxy: This one I have to thank my girlfriend for. I grew up watching FC Barcelona during the prime of their rivalry with Real Madrid but I heavily fell off of the team when Neymar Jr. left for Paris Saint-Germain as he was the reason I became a Barcelona fan. I had never been to a live professional soccer game until my girlfriend showed me $30 seats and even during the worst season in club history, a lively crowd of fans who want to see the Blue White and Gold regain their place at the top of Major League Soccer.
I also have a plethora of other interests in sports: Golf, F1, College Sports, scouting quarterbacks in College Football (and the PAC-12 before its undeserved demise), but those will be blogs that won’t be as frequent because as I’ve stated a few times in this opening blog, I am obsessive and my teams will come first.
Other Blogs
Sports Cards have been a part of my life since the COVID-19 Pandemic and have stuck with me as a way to grow closer toward the athletes, actors, creators and artists that make me feel seen. I attend card shows, buy cards online and consume way too many videos about them on YouTube and other socials, so expect some blogs about those pieces of cardboard I care way too much about!
Film & TV are some of the forefronts of my everyday life. I grew up watching Star Wars and Big Brother while later in life finding I love bad reality TV and an affinity for Professional Wrestling. I plan on writing some blogs about shows and wrestling events that have impacted me and mean a lot to me.
Well! There you have it! The first ever Wheel Easy Blog from yours truly. Hopefully I can get you fine people to keep coming back and that we can share some good times together. ‘Til next time, keep it rollin’ my friends.
